The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) is inviting local residents to participate in the “Flag-enger Hunt,” a nationwide challenge to locate and document the oldest American flags in their communities.
The Polly Cooper Chapter, NSDAR, has uncovered notable finds in Westchester and surrounding areas, including a 45-star wool flag in Chappaqua and a 36-star “Lincoln Flag” at The Columns Museum in Milford, Pennsylvania.
The oldest flag discovered so far dates to 1836. This fragile, handmade linen flag with 25 stars belonged to U.S. Navy Lieutenant Charles S. Dunscombe and is preserved at the Yorktown Museum, according to Rosemarie Schmidt. Though it is not on display due to its delicate condition, it may be viewed by appointment.
Residents who know of a historic flag are encouraged to photograph it, share its history, and submit it to info@pollycooperdar.org.
