The New York State Public High School Athletic Association golf championships were held at Mill Creek Golf Club in Churchville on June 7-8, with Yorktown represented by twin juniors Joe and Kurt Carey.
Both finished tied for 20th at 8-over par, 13 strokes behind the champion.
Husker coach Skip Marini was proud that the two Careys competed together in the state tournament for the second consecutive year.
“For Joe and Kurt to make the New York state team two years in a row is an unbelievable accomplishment, I know there probably have been brothers, but I doubt there’s ever been twin brothers,” Marini said. “The love and support they have for each other is truly amazing.”
Marini said it is easy to see why the Careys are so successful in golf.
“Their work ethic, attention to detail, diligence in practicing are unparalleled,” Marini said. “They both work with a teaching professional, a strength and fitness trainer and they always have my 100 percent support in everything they do.”
Kurt said it meant the world to him to compete alongside Joe at such a high level and contend for a state championship for the second straight year.
He said returning to the state tournament for a second consecutive season was "awesome."
“Being able to represent my school and section is something I take great pride in,” Kurt added.
Kurt focused on the positives from his performance at the state tournament.
“It might not have went the way I wanted but just taking the positives from what went well and using that to my advantage for the rest of the season is the key to success,” Kurt said.
For Joe, it was his fourth consecutive appearance at the state tournament.
“It’s a cool experience and to share it with my brother makes it better,” Joe said.
He added that golfing at the states for a fourth straight season “means a lot” because “it shows the hard work is paying off.”
As for his performance, Joe said he “played decently, just some mishaps here and there.”
Looking ahead to next year, Joe said it would be a good experience to win the state championship in his final season, and Kurt agreed.
“Going to states is always so much fun and knowing that I have what it takes to become a state champion keeps me motivated,” Kurt said.
Marini said he is looking forward to next season.
“I am looking forward to the 2027 season, but it will also be very sad for me because they are both going to be graduating seniors, and I realize that my tenure and ride with them will be over,” Marini said. “I will always keep in touch with them and they will always have my full support.”
He said he expects both of them to return to the New York State team next year, but with different results.
“Watch out states, the Carey boys are coming,” Marini said.
