BYSNS 4, Cortlandt 3
Saturday, Dec. 14, Brewster Ice Arena
BYSNS overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat rival Cortlandt 4-3.
“Tonight was a huge win for us,” said BYSNS coach Ryan Langkafel. “We were slow to start, after playing back-to-back nights, but in the third period, our message was to play with pride, energy, and to spare nothing.
“They came out and did just that, they left nothing to spare and we came away with the win,” he continued. “I am very proud of our effort, battle, and resilience tonight.”
Cortlandt led 2-0 at the end of the second period.
“What had our team going early on in the game is that we were all hungry to come out with a win,” said Cortlandt’s Jack Di Benedetto. “Overall our record doesn’t reflect the type of talent and team we are. We collectively got pucks to the net and created some chaos in front of the goalie. We stuck to our basics and played well fundamentally at the beginning of the game.”
The Bisons came back to score three straight third-period goals to go up 3-2 with 7:02 left in the game.
Di Benedetto (1G, 1A) courtesy of assists from John Gannon (2A) and Nate Garofalo, tied the game at 3-3 with 6:34 remaining.
“It felt great to tie the game up in the third late,” Di Benedetto said. “Obviously the end wasn’t the outcome we were looking for but I wouldn’t have scored that goal if it wasn’t for Nate Garofalo and Hudson Tarkington’s efforts without the puck. My linemates got it deep in their zone, and pushed the defenders back making it easy for me to finish on that third goal. They deserve just as much credit as me on tying up the game.”
With 3:50 to go, Salvatore (2G, 2A) scored a short-handed goal unassisted to give the Bisons their exhilarating victory.
“It was a big moment in the game, tied 3-3 and we were down a man killing a penalty, our goal was to keep them to the outside and not give up any clear chances until we were at even strength,” Langkafel said. “Salvatore came up with a moment of brilliance as he pounced on a loose puck and rushed it down the ice to score the goal. It is never ideal to be down 2-0, but our team was determined and found the fire to keep pushing in the third period. The bench was energized and we knew we had to shift our mindset to close out the win after that goal.”
Danny Luis (1G, 1A), Krempler (1G, 1A), Ryan Dean (2A), and Vaughn (32 saves) produced for BYSNS while Aidan Dzubak (1G, 1A), Tarkington (1G), and Sean Mansfield (26 saves) did the job for the Rebels.
