The Town of Yorktown has renamed the Battle of Yorktown the Dan Strauss Memorial Battle of Yorktown, honoring his dedication to keeping the community clean.
A lively fixture at Town Board meetings, affectionately described as a “one man show,” Dan Strauss was known for his unwavering dedication to the town he loved. He could often be found walking through Yorktown with quiet purpose, picking up litter and tending to public spaces—simple acts that reflected a profound commitment to keeping his community beautiful.
He died on April 6 at the age of 86.
Supervisor Ed Lachterman said the Refuse & Recycling Department considers it a “tremendously good idea” that reflects Strauss’s commitment and volunteer service.
“They miss him sorely,” Lachterman said. “I think that he deserves that.”
Residents are invited to take part in the annual cleanup event scheduled for Saturday, April 25, in recognition of the 56th anniversary of Earth Day. The volunteer effort encourages community members to help remove litter and beautify public spaces across the town.
Participants should register with the Yorktown Refuse & Recycling Department so crews can properly collect the orange litter bags distributed during the cleanup. Supplies are available at the department office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
