Soccer is a family affair for Lakeland’s Boyko

Posted

Lucas Boyko is in his fourth year of playing for the Lakeland boys varsity soccer squad, after getting called up for the sectionals from junior varsity his freshman year. He is one of Lakeland’s three senior captains, along with Owen Becker and Jonathan Lage.

“We've been teammates since we were kids and the chemistry we share at this point is unmatched,” Boyko said of his co-captains.

A natural center back who can also play in the midfield, Boyko garnered All-Section Honorable Mention and All-League honors as a junior, a year after earning All-League Honorable Mention and Lakeland Rookie of the Year accolades as a sophomore.

How old were you when you started playing soccer and what got you started?

I was 4 years old. Growing up in a soccer family, it was almost guaranteed the game would be a big part of my life.

What is your favorite thing about being on the Lakeland team?

The brotherhood I get to experience and be a part of.

What is your favorite team activity or pre- or post-game ritual?

My favorite team ritual is our yearly "woods run" where all the guys run together through the woods to the park near the school. Part of this tradition includes the seniors making speeches to the team.

Who are your biggest role models?

I'd like to credit my family, specifically my older cousins, for being my role models. Without them and their support, I wouldn't be anywhere near to where I am today.

Tell us one thing about yourself that not a lot of people know.

Even as a center back, I've still managed to rack up three hat tricks in my soccer career.

What do you plan to do after high school?

I plan on majoring in computer science in college and potentially playing college soccer.

What’s your favorite sports team?

The best soccer team in Portugal, S.L. Benfica. I've been a fan ever since I was born.

What is your favorite music to listen to while warming up for a game?

It ranges from artists like Drake and NBA Youngboy to Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti, and Kyle Richh. Rap is definitely a go-to for warming up.

What’s your dream vacation spot?

Spain: I think attending a Real Madrid game would be a cool experience.

What would you tell young athlete about trying out for the Lakeland soccer team?

I would encourage anyone who enjoys the game to try out for the Lakeland soccer team, even if they are hesitant. My years of playing and learning from my teammates and coaches have been a great experience and I would want that for any young athlete that loves soccer.

The memories with my team and the fun we have had have been completely worth the hard work and commitment.
