September is National Recovery Month, an annual observance highlighting recovery from mental health and substance use disorders. In recognition of the month, state Sen. Pete Harckham delivered 100 doses of emergency naloxone Sept. 1, to Mohegan EMS. Chief Matthew Kness accepted the delivery of the overdose-reversal medication alongside Lt. Matthew Neglia and EMT Engineer Krish Pandya.
Often known by the brand name Narcan, naloxone can reverse an opioid overdose, including those involving heroin, fentanyl and prescription opioids such as oxycodone. The fast-acting medication can restore normal breathing within minutes.
