Dear Dr. Linda, Our son, Kevin, was just rejected from three of the six colleges he applied to. He didn’t get into any of his “reach” schools and is devastated. So are we. Four years ago, his older brother applied to the same schools and was... more
I started thinking about some of the places I’ve lived over the years and decided I want to tell you about Quigley. Quigley was my first-ever landlord. It was in college, while I was attending SUNY Oswego. I had transferred there as a junior and,... more
Each year, Earth Day invites us to reflect on our responsibility to protect the planet we call home. But in 2026, that reflection must turn into urgency. The challenges before us — climate change, rising energy costs and threats to public health... more
One of the privileges of this campaign has been the conversations it's opened, not just with Yorktown residents, but with business leaders, restaurateurs, developers, and community stakeholders across Westchester County. What I've heard has... more
NY STATE BUDGET WOES CONTINUE I am deeply saddened and find it increasingly alarming that Gov. Kathy Hochul continues to delay setting forth the New York State budget, which will help municipalities, schools, highway departments and ordinary... more
Hear me out. Some songs don’t just sound good. They do something to me. A few notes in, and I can feel a shift. I feel lighter. A little more like myself. I have a handful of songs … more
On June 4, each of our publications will include a special pullout: Celebrating America, marking the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding. I’ll admit something candidly. We didn’t arrive at this idea without hesitation. In a moment when... more

Dear Editor, In the wake of Sheridan Gorman’s horrific and senseless murder, Yorktown News publisher Brett Freeman called on readers to “come together, support one another, and help ensure Sheridan’s life is honored—and never forgotten," (Yorktown tragedy felt across region, questions remain). more
No one can truly understand what that phone call felt like. The kind of call that stops time. The kind of call that no parent, no family, should ever have to receive. In a single moment, everything changed forever. A beautiful, loving family, one... more
The death of Sheridan Gorman is a tragedy that has shaken our community to its core. An 18-year-old young woman, out with friends to see something as simple as the Northern Lights, never came home. Her life was taken in an instant. That reality... more
Dear Editor, The recent decision by Lakeland Superintendent Dr. Karen Gagliardi to invest in a large number of diesel buses and assorted gas-driven vehicles, seemingly a pre-emption to the NYS Electric Bus mandate coming in 2027, is a continuing affront to Yorktown's children. more
Dear Editor, At this time, I need the town and school to work in collaboration to address our community and school family’s concerns. At the recent Town Board meeting, it was announced that March would be recognized as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in Yorktown. Now that April is here — dedicated to Autism Awareness — this is a particularly fitting and timely topic to address. As a Yorktown SEPTA board member, a resident for over three decades and a YHS graduate, I am deeply passionate about these concerns and committed to helping resolve them, as they are shared by many in our community — not just myself. more
Dear Editor, Every Mike Lawler town hall is fraudulent and an insult to his constituents. I pay his salary; he is my public servant. And as my servant, I expect respect, but all I get at his town halls is insult and disrespect. more

This is particularly true if the estranged person is a child, grandchild or sibling (if one has no children), as well as a person with whom one previously had a good relationship. more
In 1979, I joined the Women’s Civic Club of Katonah. That was 47 years ago, and I have enjoyed just as many years of camaraderie, hard work, giving and fun. I also belong to five other clubs (and at one time there was a sixth). As much as I have... more
When the Beatles came to America, I was one of countless kids who suddenly decided they needed a guitar. Something about that moment lit a spark in so many of us. I got my first guitar not long after, and like a lot of beginners. more
The Town never provided funding for SRO’s that are members of the Westchester County Police Department . It has always been the Lakeland Central School District’s responsibility. The School District is able to raise funds for SRO’s directly through taxation. School taxes already account for approximately 70% of the yearly property taxes that each property owner pays. more
