The organizations behind Yorktown's annual Run for Recovery 5K are seeking sponsors ahead of this year's event, which supports individuals on their recovery journeys and raises awareness during National Recovery Month in September.
Run 4 Recovery, Drug Crisis in Our Backyard, Search for Change and the Alliance for Safe Kids will host the 12th annual Run for Recovery 5K Run/Walk on Sept. 26 at FDR State Park, Lot 1. The race begins at 9 a.m.
Participants also may take part virtually throughout September.
Alliance for Safe Kids Executive Director Liz Talbert told the Yorktown Town Board on Aug. 5 that sponsorships are critical to the success of the event.
“This is our only organized fundraiser for the year," Talbert said, adding that the organization is looking to cast “a wide net” when it comes to sponsorship opportunities.
"I know that you all have contacts throughout the community and may know of someone who would be the candidate that you can connect me to, or even just pass around the information yourself," Talbert told the Town Board.
In addition to sponsorships, participants are encouraged to create personal fundraising pages or form teams to expand the event's impact. Organizers said fundraising can honor a loved one, celebrate recovery, support prevention efforts or advocate for mental health awareness. Teams may include family members, friends, coworkers, schools, organizations or recovery communities.
"Each step symbolizes hope and resilience, honoring those who have overcome challenges. The event unites individuals, breaks stigma, and empowers others to seek help," the event website states. "Crossing the finish line gives a feeling of accomplishment, knowing you have made a difference. Recovery is possible, and together, we can inspire change."
Talbert said the event is open to participants of all fitness levels.
“I don't want people to be turned away thinking that this is a serious 5K,” Talbert said, noting that while some participants train for the run and track their times, others participate simply for fun.
“But then families come out, they're pushing baby carriages, you know, walking with their dogs, and it's just a beautiful community event,” she said.
Registration costs $45 for adults and $20 for children ages 17 and younger. Participants who register early, while supplies last, will receive a free event T-shirt.
As of Wednesday evening, organizers had raised $14,119 toward their $50,000 fundraising goal.
