Dear Editor,
As a 20-year professional educator and now as a candidate for the Somers Board of Education, I’ve been deeply concerned by the recent discussions surrounding bullying within our school community. I want to state unequivocally: Somers schools should have zero tolerance for bullying in any form.
Every child deserves to feel safe, supported, and valued, whether they are in the classroom, on the playground, an athletic field or online. My two decades in education have provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the devastating impact bullying can have on students. As a teacher and assistant principal, I worked directly with students and families to address bullying incidents, striving to cultivate a safe and nurturing learning environment.
Furthermore, as Director of Technology, I’ve gained invaluable experience in navigating the complex world of cyberbullying. I’ve conducted numerous investigations into online harassment and led parent workshops focused on protecting our children in the digital age, empowering families to navigate the challenges of social media and online safety.
If elected to the Board of Education, I will prioritize the following:
● Active collaboration: I will actively engage with the Board of Education committees focused on anti-bullying and social-emotional learning, working collaboratively to enhance our district’s approach to student well-being.
● Policy review and update: I will meticulously review and, where necessary, update the district’s policies on bullying, the code of conduct, and the acceptable use policy. This will ensure consistent application and adherence to the latest best practices in student safety and accountability.
● Digital citizenship education: I will champion the integration of comprehensive digital citizenship education into our curriculum, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to use technology responsibly, understand online safety and engage positively in digital spaces.
Building a school environment free from bullying requires a multifaceted approach and a steadfast commitment from all stakeholders. I am dedicated to working with parents, teachers, administrators and students to ensure that every child in Somers feels safe, supported and empowered to thrive.
Bullying has no place in our schools, and I am committed to ensuring that every student feels safe and supported. As your next school board trustee, I will do exactly that.
Sincerely,
-Michael Ritacco
Candidate, Somers Board of Education
