Dear Editor,
If you live in Yorktown and drive, you are now experiencing being stuck waiting for a few lights to change in what can only be called new development generated traffic.
Contrary to the assurances of high-priced traffic experts, at high peak times you find yourself in a half mile or more wait on Underhill Avenue, Route 6 and 118 and Commerce Street.
Why were these mega developments approved by the town board allowed to be built adjacent to these roadway bottle necks? We have only our elected politicians to thank. Don’t forget those revolving door ex-politicians who bent decades-long zoning regulations for developers, voted for laws that gave them financial incentives to build, then went to work for these same developers the moment they were voted out.
More developments are planned and are in the approval process with no end in sight. Some have called Yorktown a Disneyland sized ATM for developers. You can’t stop the tide or inevitable change but maybe we should try to mitigate the harmful effects from these developments on residents' daily lives? Our politicians' "let’s build it first and worry about the resulting traffic later mentality" hasn't worked. Maybe the solutions to Yorktown’s traffic problems aren’t contained in any ginned-up traffic study but can only be found in the voting booth?
