Yorktown Youth Council hosts breakfast at Beaveridge

Posted

A recent community event brought together youth and older residents to share time, conversation, and connection in a welcoming setting.

The Yorktown Youth Council, in partnership with the Town of Yorktown and the Alliance for Safe Kids, Inc. (ASK), hosted an interactive breakfast for the residents of the Beaveridge Senior Housing on Saturday, May 2. It was a wonderful morning and enjoyed by almost 40 residents, student volunteers and the distinguished guests that stopped by.

The mission of the Yorktown Youth Council is to promote positive youth involvement in the community; provide a safe forum that allows youth to express ideas, concerns and comments; and to support youth inspired community projects.

"Growing up in an intergenerational home, I saw firsthand the value of connection between youth and senior citizens,” said Gillian Grabowski, a Yorktown High School senior and founding member of the Yorktown Youth Council. “After bringing my vision to the Yorktown Youth Council, we brought it to life with the Breakfast with Seniors at Beaver Ridge—bringing together high school students and the residents at Beaveridge for a morning of conversation, creativity, and community.”

She added that those “in attendance enjoyed getting to know one another with the help of conversation starters at each table, decorating birthday bags together, and listening to classic hits from the 1950s in the background. With generous support from local businesses, the event was a heartwarming success — and just the beginning of many more youth-driven initiatives to come."

For Town Supervisor Ed Lachterman, it was a “pleasure to see the interaction between our youth, and our seniors at Beaveridge.”

He added that “the fact that this was driven by a desire by the Yorktown Youth Council makes one realize the commitment and mutual respect our residents have for each other.”

The Yorktown Youth Council expressed appreciation to local organizations and businesses for their generous support and contributions to a recent community initiative.

“As the adult advisor for the Yorktown Youth Council, I couldn’t be prouder of the way this dynamic group of youth from both the Lakeland Central School District and the Yorktown Central School District worked together to host this very thoughtful event,” said Liz Talbert the Executive Director of Alliance for Safe Kids.
