Yorktown sets precautionary hearing on possible tax cap override

Posted

The Yorktown Town Board set a public hearing for Nov. 17 on a proposed local law that would allow the town to override the state property tax levy limit for the 2027 budget.

Town officials said the hearing is a precautionary measure and does not mean the town has decided to exceed the tax cap. The 2027 budget has not yet been finalized.

Supervisor Ed Lachterman said the board will determine whether an override is necessary after reviewing a preliminary budget in November. He cited rising costs, including expenses for gas and electricity, as factors that could affect the budget.

The proposed legislation also cites rising costs for labor, energy, equipment and road repairs as potential factors.

The state tax levy limit applies to the amount of property tax revenue a local government can raise. It does not directly determine individual property tax bills for residents across Yorktown’s taxing districts.

The board voted 4-1 to set the hearing, with Councilman Sergio Esposito opposed.
