Nearly 1,700 worn American flags were given a final, dignified farewell in Yorktown during a solemn community ceremony honoring the nation’s symbol.

On Saturday, June 13, members of Yorktown American Legion Post 1009, Sons Squadron and Auxiliary Unit 1009 gathered with the Yorktown Fire Department, VFW Post 8328 and Scout Troop 202 to retire nearly 1,700 worn U.S. flags in a solemn ceremony at the Yorktown Fire Department Carnival Grounds.

The flags were collected over the past year by the American Legion and VFW posts. Both posts maintain flag collection boxes outside their buildings for community drop-off of unserviceable flags year-round.
