Yorktown opens renovated pickleball courts

Residents must have a permit to use the facility

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. —Yorktown officially opened a newly renovated pickleball facility at Tom Diana Park, located within the Granite Knolls Recreation and Sports Complex.

The facility features six courts with high-quality playing surfaces, fresh paint, durable 8-foot fencing and overhead lighting to accommodate evening play. Town officials said the upgrades were made in response to the sport’s growing popularity and community demand for better infrastructure.

Members of the Town Board joined residents and town staff at the courts to celebrate on Aug. 4.

“We have reclaimed the ground here so that there will no longer be any cracks,” Parks and Recreation Superintendent James Martorano Jr. said in an Aug.4 press release from the town. “We’ve always led the way with pickleball, and we are continuing to lead the way with the best pickleball courts in Westchester County.”

The town said the project incorporated a new drainage system, designed to prevent future damage and extend the lifespan of the surfaces.

Supervisor Ed Lachterman praised the development of the park.

“This comes down to a bunch of dedicated pickleball players who really helped to not only give advice, but they volunteer, fundraise, help run the courts and make sure that people have their permits,” he said.

According to Martorano, the previous pickleball courts developed cracks because they were built on top of old tennis courts that had already cracked and become unstable. The renovation involved removing the damaged tennis courts and installing a stable foundation beneath the new pickleball courts.

Permits are required for residents to use the courts. Permit are valid from April 1 to Nov. 30.

The pickleball courts are open every day from sunrise to 10 p.m.
