The Town Board is considering expanding a planned streetscape project into a larger downtown revitalization effort, adding potential improvements to sidewalks, bike lanes, parking and traffic flow throughout Yorktown Heights.
The discussion began as the board reviewed responses to a request for proposals (RFP) for streetscape improvements on Downing Drive and Veterans Road. Councilman Sergio Esposito suggested expanding the project's scope to include additional downtown corridors, creating a more comprehensive plan rather than addressing individual streets separately.
The proposed expansion could include portions of Commerce Street, Route 118, Underhill Avenue and additional sections of Veterans Road.
“We should have a plan for the entire downtown area,” Esposito said at the July 21 Town Board meeting.
The board discussed creating a long-term streetscape plan that could guide future development and infrastructure projects.
Councilwoman Susan Siegel supported expanding the project’s scope, saying the town should consider the “heart of downtown Yorktown Heights” as a whole rather than completing disconnected improvements.
Other sections sections under consideration include Commerce Street, Underhill Avenue and more.
“We have to look ahead for the future,” she said.
Town officials said a broader plan could also help guide future private development by establishing design goals for sidewalks, pedestrian access and streetscape features. Siegel noted that recent redevelopment projects have already incorporated sidewalk improvements that align with the town’s goals.
The board agreed to pursue a new RFP for a more comprehensive streetscape plan that would incorporate the expanded vision. Siegel, however, voted against advertising the RFP, saying she wanted to review the language before it was released.
Other board members disagreed with that approach and supported moving forward with advertising the RFP while the details were finalized.
