Third annual MLK Beyond the ‘Dream’ event brings community members together for discussion

YORKTOWN, N.Y. —Nearly 40 members of the Yorktown community gathered at Grace Lutheran Church on Monday to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and engage in a meaningful discussion about lived experiences and history.

Sponsored by Yorktown for Justice and Race Amity of Northern Westchester and Putnam, the third annual event focused on King's life, his enduring impact, and what the group described as “some of his most powerful and perhaps unfamiliar works.”

Sarah Wilson, of Yorktown for Justice, said the event was just one way to remind the community about the deeper messages King spent his whole life speaking about.

“Fighting for justice and equal rights—beyond Black and white issues, economic issues, justice issues,” Wilson told Yorktown News. “It’s important for us...to talk and be a community talking through some of these issues.”

Wilson added that “especially on Inauguration Day, if we can remember what we as citizens need to do—that we need to hold our elected officials accountable” and to help “to achieve the vision, the dream that Martin Luther King had.”

For Judyth Stavans, a committee member of Race Amity of Northern Westchester and Putnam, the event being held on both Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Inauguration Day—a day of many emotions— stood as a space for togetherness.

“At times like these, the community really needs a place to gather and learn and share, hope,” Stavans told Yorktown News.
