Yorktown got off to a great start at Mahopac on Saturday night before the Wolf Pac rallied for a 20-17 victory.

Highlighting the Huskers’ effort were two long touchdown runs by their workhorse running back, senior captain Tyler Caricati (15 carries, 178 yards, 2 receptions, 13 yards, 3 tackles).

“Both touchdowns felt amazing,” Caricati said. “I feel blessed to be a part of this team. I wish we were having more success but I feel blessed to be a part either way. These are my boys and if I can help bring them to success I am happy. Unfortunately we haven’t had a super successful season but we are a brotherhood. And we will all continue to work hard to the end.”

The Huskers received the opening kickoff and wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Two quarterback keepers by senior captain Eamon Coney (5-for-11, 68 passing yards; 13 carries, 46 yards, 5 tackles), one for 5 yards and another for 6 yards, followed by a 5-yard run by Caricati, enabled Yorktown to move the ball to its own 36-yard line.

On the next play, Caricati went down the left sideline for an electrifying 64-yard touchdown run. Sophomore Noah Kachmar’s PAT gave the Huskers a 7-0 lead one minute, 38 seconds into the game.

Coney delivered with his legs and arm late in the opening quarter when he rolled to his left and threw a strike to senior captain and wide receiver Jaden Renzo (7 tackles), resulting in a 44-yard pass completion, putting the ball at the Mahopac 7.

“It was a good play call and a great route, so I threw it and he (Renzo) made a great catch,” Coney said.

The drive ended early in the second quarter with a 23-yard field goal by Kachmar, extending the Huskers’ advantage to 10-0.

“Noah’s kick was very important for us,” Coney said. “Any drive where we get into the redzone, it’s important we walk away with points.”

Mahopac cut Yorktown’s lead to 10-6 with 33 seconds remaining in the first half on an 11-yard touchdown run.

The Wolf Pac had the first possession in the second half and drove 71 yards, capping the drive with a 2-yard touchdown scamper. The PAT gave Mahopac a 13-10 lead with 5:19 remaining in the third quarter.

Caricati put Yorktown (2-4) back in front when he initially went up the middle, then bounced outside at the Mahopac 43, racing to a 49-yard touchdown run with 4:19 to go in the game. After Kachmar’s PAT, the Huskers led 17-13.

“Tyler did a great job and ran behind the offensive line who played great,” Coney said.

Caricati ran for his two touchdowns behind the line of senior center Luan Sinanaj (4 tackles), junior guards Jospeh Cermele and Nick Guven, and junior tackles, Myles Forden and Joseph Kalkowski.

Mahopac, though, answered with an 11-yard touchdown pass and an extra point with less than a minute remaining to secure the victory.

Jarron Sligh (4 carries, 15 yards, 2 receptions, 11 yards, 4 tackles), Dom DeBellis (15-yard reception, 4 tackles), Aidan Concannon (8 tackles), and Ryan Fastiggi (4 tackles, 1 for loss) also contributed to the Huskers’ cause.

Yorktown’s next game will be at Somers, which shares the top spot in the Class A state poll with Garden City on Long Island, at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16.
