YORKTOWN, N.Y. — Dance is art. Dance is community. Dance is peace. For Yorktown High School senior Marina Bowen, dancing means being fully present in the moment with the music—no need to think, just feel. As she looks ahead to her next steps and reflects on her journey, we caught up with Bowen, who shared insight into how dance shaped her.
When did you start performing and engaging with the performing arts?
I started dancing when I was just 2 years old, beginning with ballet and hip-hop classes. As I got older, I explored more styles like jazz, contemporary, and lyrical. Eventually, I started competing in dance competitions, which has been an amazing experience and a big part of my dance journey.
Do you plan to continue performing after high school?
After high school, I plan to continue pursuing my love for dance in college by trying out for the dance team. Joining the team would not only allow me to keep growing and improving as a dancer but also give me the chance to connect with others who share the same passion and dedication to dance that I have. I’m excited about the idea of being part of a team where we can inspire and support each other while creating amazing memories together.
Who inspires you?
When I was younger, my sister was a dancer, and I looked up to her so much. She competed and made dancing look like so much fun. Watching how talented she was and how much she enjoyed it inspired me to follow in her footsteps. I started taking the same types of dance classes she did, and that is when my own love for dance began. I was especially inspired by how dancing helped build her confidence and discipline, both on and off the stage. Seeing her carry herself with such poise and determination motivated me to work hard and develop those same qualities through dance.
What is it about the performing arts that you love most?
Dancing has a way of bringing people together. It has brought people into my life that I never would’ve otherwise connected with. These are friendships and bonds that I truly cherish. Dancing can be challenging as it requires constant practice, precision, and pushing past physical and mental limits. However, these challenges help me grow not only as a dancer but also as a person. When I’m dancing, all the worries and distractions of the day fade away. It’s just me, the music, and the movement.
What do you do in your free time?
I love listening to music and learning new dance trends I find online. I also enjoy hanging out with my friends and family, whether we’re shopping, going to sporting events, or watching a show or movie. To me, those are the perfect ways to unwind and have fun.
