YORKTOWN, N.Y.—They talked the talk… Now, they must walk the walk.

Nia Gooden of New Rochelle HS and Sheldon Joseph of Walter Panas HS recently won first and second place awards in the Post/Westchester County Level, American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program, "A Constitutional Speech Contest.”

They each delivered memorized speeches on the Constitution for 8-10 minutes, followed by a 3-5 minute talk on one of four Constitutional amendments, revealed to the contestants during the competition.

The event was held at the Yorktown American Legion Post #1009.

Up next, the student orators will compete at the district level; only one will proceed to the zone, where they will compete to reach the New York State contest and, potentially, the national competition in Hillsdale, Michigan.

The annual event is open to all area high school students, grades 9-12.

Scholarship prizes are offered at each level, with a first-place award of $25,000 at the Nationals.

Students interested in taking part in next year's contest are encouraged to contact their school guidance counselors or the Post #1009, Education Chairman John Witt (johnwitt@optonline.net) for further information.
