YORKTOWN, N.Y. — For another year, Yorktown has been listed as one of the safest small towns in the country by MoneyGeek, a website that provides financial guidance and information on a variety of topics.
Yorktown, based on a crime cost per capita of $57 in 2023, sits at No. 6, just one spot above Carmel, with a crime cost per capita of $64 and two spots above Wakhill, with a crime cost per capita of $68.
MoneyGeek, which defines small towns or cities as having a population between 30,000 and 100,000 residents calculated the average cost of crime in small towns and cities at $1,141 in 2023. Yorktown has a population of nearly 40,000 people.
According to a press release from the town, MoneyGeek analyzed crime statistics by quantifying the cost of crime and ranking small cities and towns across the country. Data includes violent crimes—murder, rape and aggravated assault—as well as property crimes like burglaries and car theft.
Chief of Police Robert Noble said in the release that he is proud of his team.
“Yorktown taxpayers are receiving excellent value for their buck, and top-notch public safety service from their police department.”
Per the data from MoneyGeek, small towns are not necessarily safer than bigger cities. But this recognition, Supervisor Ed Lachterman said in the release, highlights the work of the police department and represents the close community.
“Together, we’re making Yorktown a place where families can thrive with peace of mind.”
