Yorktown adopts ‘do not knock’ registry

Yorktown residents who want to keep door-to-door peddlers and solicitors away from their homes will soon have a new tool: a town “do not knock” registry.

The Town Board adopted a revised law regulating peddling and soliciting Sept. 15, creating a registry that allows owners or occupants of residential properties to request that peddlers and solicitors not visit their homes.

“By adding a do not knock registry, an owner or occupant of a residential property, located in town of Yorktown, and wishes to prohibit, soliciting, peddling on the premises, shall complete a form, which will be available in my office or on our website,” said Town Clerk Diana Quast, who took the lead on the change.

The completed forms will place properties on a list that will be provided to peddlers and solicitors when they obtain their required permits from the town. Those individuals will then be prohibited from knocking on doors at properties listed on the registry.

Quast said the new law gives the Yorktown Police Department “some teeth in order to issue summonses” if peddlers or solicitors violate the registry.

“I also want to say that this does not cover certain things—f you're going on a property for political reasons, for charitable reasons, for non commercial reasons, you won't be subject to this law,” Quast said. “That's important to know that there's a difference.”

The town also plans to offer stickers that residents can purchase through the clerk’s office to place on their doors or windows. Quast said it will take a couple of weeks for the registry and related materials to be put in place.

The board opened and closed a public hearing on the revised law. There were no public comments, and the board adopted the measure.
