YHVFD responds to multiple calls ahead of annual parade and carnival

Posted

Emergency calls kept the Yorktown Heights firefighters busy Wednesday as the department balanced multiple responses with preparations for its annual Fireman’s Parade and Carnival.

The day began at 9:06 a.m. with a response to a vehicle fire near Underhill Avenue and the Taconic State Parkway exit ramp. Crews quickly extinguished the blaze and cleared the scene without incident, according to a Facebook post from the all-volunteer agency.

About 30 minutes later, firefighters were alerted to a crash in the 1100 block of Underhill Avenue. Responders found a box truck off the roadway and two injured individuals, including one person who had been struck by their own vehicle. Both patients were transported to a regional trauma center. Additional information on their injuries was not provided.

The department’s third major call of the day came at 1:04 p.m., when firefighters were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with entrapment at the intersection of Crow Hill Road and Lake Road. Crews arrived to find three patients, including two people trapped in separate vehicles. Firefighters secured the vehicles, extricated both occupants and transferred patient care to EMS personnel for transport.

Meanwhile, the annual Yorktown Heights Engine Co. No. 1 Fireman’s Parade and Carnival steps off at 7 p.m. and continues through Sunday.

This year’s event also serves as a sendoff for the nearly 75-year-old Commerce Street firehouse. The Yorktown Heights Fire District plans to demolish the building and replace it with a larger facility on the same site to better accommodate equipment, expand training space and enhance emergency response capabilities.

The department is encouraging parade attendees to wear red, white and blue or carry American flags in recognition of the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
