It was the best of times, it was the wurst of times.
To the delight of hot dog fans young and old, Oscar Mayer’s famed Wienermobile rolled into the parking lot at ShopRite on North Bedford Road in Mount Kisco in June.
The event featured fun, games, freebies, photo ops, and a chance to learn more about the iconic brand from the company’s cheerful rolling ambassadors, the Hotdoggers.
FRANKLY SPEAKING
Here are a few bun, er fun, facts about the Wienermobile, a marketing tool for the Oscar Mayer brand.
It was conceived by Oscar Mayer's nephew, Carl Mayer, in 1936.
The big hot dog on wheels is 27 feet – or 64 hot dogs – long and 11 feet high. There are six in the fleet.
It reportedly has visited all 50 states, including Whittier, Alaska, one of the most remote places in America.
Alas, Wienermobile folks do not haul hot dogs, but they do hand out adorable plastic Wiener Whistles and stickers that boast ‘I saw it!” They also give fans the occasional free ride.
Its fiberglass body sits on a converted General Motors Chevrolet chassis, has a gullwing door, and sports an interior with a hot dog-shaped dashboard and six seats upholstered in ketchup red velvet and mustard yellow leather. There are no bathrooms or sleeping quarters. However, there is enough room for displays, luggage and up to 14,000 whistles.
The drivers – recent college grads who sign on for one year -- are known as Hotdoggers. They undergo two weeks of training, part of which is learning how to drive and wave at the same time.
Its horn plays the company’s famous jingle: “Oh I wish I were an Oscar Mayer Wiener …”
In 2023, the Wienermobile was temporarily renamed the "Frankmobile" to promote Oscar Mayer's all-beef franks.
The “Wiener Mini” debuted in 2008 on a Mini Cooper to celebrate Oscar Mayer’s 125th anniversary. It’s stored in Wisconsin where the company is headquartered and only hits the road for very special occasions. Its license plate? LTL LINK!
The American meat and cold cut company was founded in 1883 and is a subsidiary of Kraft Heinz.
