When tragedy meets online cruelty

Posted

Dear Editor,

What started as the first warm spring-like day on March 9, Mahopac suffered double tragedies. An innocent 12-year-old boy riding his bike was hit by a truck while crossing Route 6N. All dedicated emergency personnel responded to administer first aid and transport him to the hospital.

While attending to this awful scene, another 911 call comes in about a white Jeep driving on Lake Mahopac that broke through the ice.

It was pure chaos around town — sirens blaring while stunned witnesses tried to comprehend both situations. Mahopac Falls Fire Department and Yorktown Fire Department dive teams sprung into action to retrieve the female victim, who was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition. The young boy is stable and recovering. However, the female victim later passed away.

To all the rude individuals on social media who posted despicable comments about this woman – I want you to close your mouth and use your brain to THINK…

Did she have a loving family as her backbone? Was she lucky enough to have true friends, who loved, comforted and supported her through the good and bad situations in life? Was she happily employed at a job that felt rewarding? Were there financial issues that were overtaking her strength and happiness? Did she or a family member have severe health issues that were limiting their ability to perform life’s normal tasks? Was there a recent death of somebody close to her heart?

I hope this woman has finally found peace from her demons that stole her fragility and is in a much better place.

I am appalled at the crude negativity that certain individuals posted. Do you really believe that we care about your ignorant opinions? In the future, think before you speak and keep your unkind words to yourself!

One more thought – what if this was YOU!

-Christine Hildrew, Mahopac
