SHRUB OAK, N.Y.—Voters in the Lakeland Central School District cast their ballots on Tuesday, approving the $196.9 million budget and reelecting three incumbent Board of Education members.
The $196,915,496 budget passed by a vote of 761 to 485, which reflects a 2.87 percent increase from the current year’s $191,413,753 and includes a 1.8 percent tax levy increase—below the state tax cap of 2.09 percent and less than last year’s 3.85 percent increase.
However, the tax impact varies by municipality. The district which serves students from Yorktown, Mahopac (Town of Carmel), Cortlandt, Philipstown, Putnam Valley, and Somers, calculates tax rates based on assessed property values determined by each town. After a 5.5 percent increase last year, Yorktown residents will see a 2.2 percent decrease in their school tax bills this year.
A proposition for the bus and vehicle bond passed with 825 votes in favor and 423 against, while Proposition 3, which establishes a capital reserve fund, was approved 1ith 814 yes votes and 435 no votes.
Incumbents Adam Kaufman (732 votes), Michael Marchese (747), and Marianne DiSalvo Kolesar (766) were reelected to three-year terms on the Board of Education. Write-in candidates included Joe Ascanio (338 votes), Laura Ferrelli (335), and James Hedberg (319).
The Board of Education will certify the results of the May 20 budget and trustee vote at its regular meeting on Thursday, May 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School’s Cafeteria B.
