The 14th annual TYathlon sprint triathlon and family-friendly 5K was held Saturday, Sept. 19, in and along Lake Mahopac. The event raises money for the Ty Louis Campbell Foundation, which funds research and clinical trials for aggressive childhood cancers—particularly brain tumors—and assists families whose children are undergoing treatment.
Benjamin Kessel of Brooklyn won the men’s Elite division in 54:43, while Anna Carlson, also of Brooklyn, captured the women’s Elite division in 55:39.
Mahopac was well represented: Alan Pascual won the men’s 25–29 age group in 1:03:19, Emma Long placed third in the women’s Elite division in 1:36:18 and Randy Castaldo finished eighth among 12 competitors in the men’s 40–44 division in 1:20:23.
Carmel residents included Isabel Santos (first, women’s 55–59, 1:08:47), Robert Vara (third, men’s 60–64, 1:13:20), Martin McGrath (fifth, men’s 60–64, 1:21:27) and Victor Scaperotti (sixth, men’s 55–59, 1:33:07).
Mohegan Lake finishers were Evan Kuster (first, men’s 20–24, 1:13:01), Wayne Swenson (first, men’s 30–34, 1:17:43), Daniel McMahon (fourth, men’s 40–44, 1:11:21) and James Dolan (third, men’s 55–59, 1:23:34).
Yorktown Heights was represented by Brian Burke (first, men’s 60–64, 1:08:08), John Hirsch (second, men’s 55–59, 1:11:33), Amymarie Accardi-Dey (second, women’s 45–49, 1:19:24) and Marybeth Jines (third, women’s 40–44, 1:36:39).
Baldwin Place residents Evan Wright (second, men’s 45–49, 1:27:33) and Kevin O’Keefe (12th, men’s 40–44, 1:40:43) also completed the race.
Katonah competitors included Nica Fried (second, women’s Elite, 1:31:31), David Varoli (sixth, men’s 60–64, 1:26:46) and Edward Croen (seventh, men’s 60–64, 1:53:18).
Christopher Murphy of Shrub Oak was listed among the entrants but did not record a finishing time. No Somers competitors were listed.
