The Town of Yorktown has declared a local snow emergency from 6 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, through 6 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, as a winter storm is expected to drop 12 to 18 inches of snow.
Parking on town streets will be prohibited during the emergency to keep roads clear for plows and first responders.
Supervisor Ed Lachterman said all vehicles must be removed from roadways by Sunday to make way for the Highway Department’s snowplows.
“We ask you to please help us in keeping areas clear of parked vehicles due to the fact that we are going to have to move a lot of snow, and we need places to push it,” he said. If cars are in the way, they could get damaged, especially on the streets.”
Town officials and local police are urging residents to avoid nonessential travel, prepare emergency supplies, and take only necessary trips using extreme caution. They also advise getting salt for driveways ahead of the storm, as residents should expect significant disruptions to their Sunday routines.
At times, roads will be impassable, according to Highway Superintendent Dave Paganelli.
“Please get all your emergency supplies in order now and give us the opportunity to do our job,” he said.
Residents can register for Nixle alerts by texting their zip code to 888777, follow town updates on Facebook, and call 914-962-4141 for police assistance. For more information and emergency updates, visit yorktownny.gov.
