Three-way stop approved near Lakeland Deli

A new three-way stop is coming to East Main Street near Lakeland Deli after the Yorktown Town Board unanimously approved a local law adding a stop at the intersection.

The law amends Chapter 275 of the town’s Vehicles and Traffic Code to establish a full-stop location at the intersection, creating a three-way stop.

Supervisor Ed Lachterman said the change is intended to address safety concerns around the intersection, which includes a blind curve near the Lakeland Deli building.

Lachterman said speeding has been an ongoing concern throughout Yorktown and specifically cited the curve near the intersection as an area where drivers and county buses have traveled too quickly.

He also said businesses in the area have raised concerns about vehicles entering and exiting their parking lots. Owners of Celtic Aer Gift Shop had contacted the supervisor’s office about the intersection, Lachterman said, helping prompt the town to pursue the change.

“It is a no-brainer,” Councilman Sergio Esposito said, calling the new stop a traffic-calming measure.

Howard Gould, who was the only resident to speak during the public hearing, said he has been raising concerns about the intersection for years and supported the change.

“This is the safety of the community,” Gould said. “Let’s protect the community, the residents.”

The board unanimously approved the three-way stop following the public hearing.
