From community gatherings and seasonal markets to health clinics and local fundraisers, here’s what’s happening in Mahopac and Carmel from Sept. 20 through Oct. 1.
The seventh annual Back the Blue Prayer Walk will be held Sunday, Sept. 20, at Camarda Park, 226 Seminary Hill Road, Carmel.
The event honors men and women in law enforcement, including those who have been killed in the line of duty. Participants are invited to gather in a show of honor, respect and remembrance.
Sign-in begins at 12:30 p.m., with the walk starting at 1:15 p.m. Free dessert will be available while supplies last.
The Carmel Farmers Market at Lake Mahopac will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday through Oct. 18 at Chamber Park (953 South Lake Blvd.) in Mahopac. From fresh local finds to delicious treats and community favorites, the market has become a favorite weekend destination for residents and visitors alike.
Wicked Whips New York will host a free community car show at 4:30 p.m. every Friday in the Ocean State Job Lot parking lot at Lake Plaza Shopping Center. All cars are welcome, and there is no entry fee.
The gathering, founded by Robby Cotza and his team, gives car enthusiasts an opportunity to display their vehicles, talk about cars and support businesses in the plaza. A weekly 50/50 raffle helps fund future events, with a portion of the proceeds donated to charity at the end of the year.

The town of Carmel will hold a Shred Event Day for town residents from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 26, at a new location, 179 East Lake Blvd., at the corner of Croton Falls Road. Proof of Carmel residency is required.
Residents may bring a maximum of three file boxes per car. Staples, paper clips and file folders with metal strips do not need to be removed, and participants will be able to watch the shredding process on a monitor at the side of the truck. Only paper will be accepted; plastics, CDs, DVDs, X-rays, hard drives, three-ring binders and binder clips are prohibited.

Mahopac's American Legion Post 1080 will host a steak dinner with whiskey and cigars Saturday, Sept. 26. Happy hour will run from 4 to 6 p.m. Tickets are $60 per person, with proceeds benefiting American Legion programs. Tickets may be purchased at the post lounge, 333 Buckshollow Road. The Putnam County Department of Health will offer seasonal flu vaccine clinics for county residents age 18 and older this fall.
Clinics will be held Monday, Sept. 28, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Carmel Fire Department, 94 Gleneida Ave., Carmel; Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Garrison Fire Department, 1616 Route 9, Garrison; and Monday, Oct. 19, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Carmel Fire Department.
The vaccine costs $30, payable by cash or credit card. A $2 fee applies to credit card payments. Vaccinations are free for those age 65 and older or with a Medicare card. Proof of Putnam County residency is required.
Appointments can be made at putnamcountyny.gov/fluclinic, although walk-ins are welcome. Short sleeves are recommended. For more information, call the Department of Health Immunization Program at 845-808-1332.
The Putnam County Firearm Owners Association will host a Candidates Night on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. at the Paladin Center, 39 Seminary Hill Road, Carmel.
Candidates for local and state offices are scheduled to attend, with presentations and a question-and-answer session focusing on topics including the Second Amendment, public and personal safety, pistol permits, hunting, target practice and sport shooting.
The event is open to association members and their guests. Seating is limited and not guaranteed. Reservations can be made through pcfoa.org.
Three free Senior Resource Fairs will be held in Putnam and northern Westchester counties in October, offering seniors, caregivers and family members information about elder care, Medicare, assisted living, state and county services, Alzheimer’s and memory care and other resources.
The fairs will be held Thursday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to noon at Putnam County Golf Course, 187 Hill St., Mahopac; Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m. to noon at Jefferson Village Community Center, 3500 Hill Blvd., Yorktown Heights; and Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to noon at Patterson Recreation Center, 65 Front St., Patterson.
Prescription medication drop-off will also be available at the Mahopac and Yorktown Heights events. Residents should bring unused or expired medications in a Ziploc bag for safe disposal.
The fairs are free and open to seniors, caregivers and family members.
First Presbyterian Church of Mahopac, 411 Route 6N at Secor Road, will hold its annual rummage sale Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 1-3.
An early bird preview sale will be held Thursday, Oct. 1, from 6-8 p.m., with a $5 admission fee. The sale continues Friday, Oct. 2, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday is $8 Bag Day.
The church is also seeking donations of clean, new or gently used clothing for men, women and children; coats and shoes; purses and bags; children’s toys; books for all ages (no textbooks); jewelry; dishware and glassware; bric-a-brac; and holiday and novelty items.
Donation drop-off dates are Saturday, Sept. 26, noon-2 p.m.; Sunday, Sept. 27, noon-3 p.m.; Monday, Sept. 28, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.; Tuesday, Sept. 29, noon-6 p.m.; and Wednesday, Sept. 30, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Donations should be brought to the basement of the Christian Education Building adjacent to the parking lot. Follow the stairs or ramp to the rear of the building.
