From Mess Fest and the final days of the Firemen's Carnival to National Night Out, live music, art and more, August kicks off with a bang in the local community.
The Muddy Puddles “Mess Fest” is a huge event in the tri-state area held at the sprawling Kiwi Country Day Camp in Carmel, NY. The format for the “Mess Fest” event is widespread with various tented areas and a wide range of family-friendly activities including swimming, paddle boats, rope courses, climbing walls, ziplines, treasure hunts, pie tosses, Infantry Sports and Slopstacle course, splatter paint, glitter crafts, food fights, a jumbo slip n' slide, raffles, bounce houses, tons of other activities and hundreds of kid-friendly prizes (and of course, don't forget the giant muddy puddles for jumping and a fire truck to hose kids off)!
Mess Fest proceeds help to fund pediatric cancer research through the Ty Louis Campbell Foundation, a 501.3c non-profit.
The Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department will host its annual carnival over two weekends: July 23-26 and July 30-Aug. 1. The carnival will feature rides, games, food, the department's famous sausage and peppers, the annual raffle and plenty of family-friendly entertainment.
Hours are 7 to 11 p.m. Thursday and Friday, July 23-24; 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, July 25; and 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 26. The second weekend runs 7 to 11 p.m. Thursday and Friday, July 30-31, and 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1.
The Carmel Farmers Market at Lake Mahopac will be held 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. every Sunday except July 5 and Sept. 6 through Oct. 18 at Chamber Park (953 South Lake Blvd.) in Mahopac. From fresh local finds to delicious treats and community favorites, the market has become a favorite weekend destination for residents and visitors alike.
Organizers are looking for musical acts, crafters and more, and are inviting people with “big community energy” to come be part of the “market magic.”

National Night Out returns to Airport Park on Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m., offering an evening of free family fun while fostering connections between residents and local law enforcement. Hosted by the Carmel Police Department and the Town of Carmel Recreation Department, the event will feature free barbecue, games, a bounce house and more at Airport Park, 161 Hill St., Mahopac. Admission is free.
The Recreation and Parks Department's free Sunset Concert Series will be held Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at Sycamore Park, 790 Long Pond Road, Mahopac. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

The Westchester Bluegrass Club will present Rebecca Frazier on Sunday, July 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. Frazier — the first woman to appear on the cover of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine and a multi-time IBMA Guitarist of the Year nominee — will bring her Billboard-charting blend of flatpicking guitar and soulful vocals to the outdoor concert series. Assemblyman Matt Slater, in partnership with the Putnam Community Action Partnership, is collecting new backpacks and $25 gift cards to Staples, Target or Walmart to help local students prepare for the upcoming school year. Donations will be accepted through Wednesday, Aug. 12, at Carmel Town Hall and several other locations throughout Putnam and Westchester counties.
O'Reilly Arts Bic Pen Illustrations: From July 29 through Aug. 31, the Mahopac Public Library's Third Floor Gallery will showcase more than 35 black Bic pen pet portraits by Yorktown Heights illustrator Dylan O'Reilly. Many of the works will be available for purchase.
The Lake Mahopac Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4. The luncheon and business meeting will be held at Airport Park in Mahopac. The program, “Making an Herb Wreath,” will feature Garden Club President Marie Braun demonstrating how to make a decorative wreath using herbs from her garden. Participants will then make their own herb wreaths. The fee is $5. Members are encouraged to bring their lunch.
