The Garden Club of Yorktown (GCY) will offer public tours of its newest garden at The Veteran Memorials Circle on Sept. 20, 1 to 4 p.m.
Visitors will receive a guided tour that covers garden history and information on how to reduce their lawns in favor of wildlife-friendly habitat, meadows and pollinator gardens. This will be a kid-friendly event with a scavenger hunt activity available for children.
Over the last three years, GCY has transformed the garden into a showcase of over 40 different varieties of native plants. The garden was designed as a year-round demonstration of how to attract and sustain pollinators; it contains signage and QR codes that enable residents to learn more about the plant varieties and preferred growing conditions.
The garden was recently chosen by Healthy Yards Westchester as both example of regenerative landscaping and public space partnership. According to GCY spokesperson Regina Hall, the garden was the result of the collaboration of numerous civic groups, public officials, and dedicated garden club members.
She added, “this garden proves that ecological stewardship and civic pride are inseparable. We believe VMC is a model for communities everywhere: with local partnership, our public spaces can be both historically meaningful and ecologically alive.”
The Veteran Memorials Circle is located in the heart of Yorktown, adjacent to the commuter lot behind Town Hall.
