YORKTOWN, N.Y.—Members of the Yorktown community are gearing up to brave the cold at Sparkle Lake next month.

The Friends of Yorktown Parks and Recreation is set to hold its fourth annual Polar Bear Plunge on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025. The event, which will run from 9 to 11 a.m., is open to town residents, businesses, community service organizations and nonprofits.

Bob Giordano, the president of Friends of Yorktown Parks and Recreation, said he’s once again looking forward to the event.

“We have various organizations that find some people who are willing to jump in or take the plunge.”

Community members wanting to participate can get sponsors, Giordano said. They would pay the $10 entrance fee and then reach out to family, friends, or neighbors with a pitch:

“I’m going to jump in—will you sponsor me?” he said, adding that typical donations are in the range of $10-25 for individual sponsors, which can then be used for a nonprofit or other benevolent cause.

“It’s an easy way to raise money,” Giordano added. “It’s sort of competitive in a way.”

Giordano cited the example of his grandson and his teammates from the Lakeland swim team, who participated last year, jumping into the frigid waters to raise funds for the team.

After the shock of hitting the cold water, Giordano said participants get to warm up with hot chocolate, coffee, and snacks.

According to its Facebook page, Friends of Yorktown Parks is an independent, citizen-led, nonprofit organization that works with the town to help enhance Yorktown’s Park & Recreation facilities and activities.
