Stop sexualizing female teen athletes—A plea to Mahopac schools

Posted

Dear Editor,

As a Mahopac resident, retired teacher and avid reader of Mahopac News, I’m writing out of concern for the girls/young women on the various sports teams of Mahopac and doubtless other high schools.
Each time I read and see accompanying photos of the MHS girls’ teams, I’m severely dismayed and disappointed by the uniform that they seem to have adopted.

Why, when compared to the boys’ photos, where shorts come almost to the knee, are the girls’ photos almost always showing them in extremely short-shorts? In fact, in a Mahopac News article about two weeks ago, one female athlete’s shorts showed her actual butt cheek!

The Oct. 23 edition showed the soccer, cross country and volleyball girls’ teams all wearing extremely short shorts, barely (no pun intended) covering their privates, while clearly on Page 28 the boys’ soccer team shorts touched their knees!

In 2025, why does there remain such a double standard? If I were a parent, I’d be up in arms! Is there really no modesty, no concern for the overt exposure of these young women? While perhaps some of this should be aimed at the athletic department and/or the school board, I’m also directly asking other parents, the young women themselves and the Mahopac community: protect these young women’s respect, images and standing in both the athletic and general community!

In 2025, we should be well above objectifying girls/women as sex objects, especially in an era where women’s professional sports are finally gaining the respect and acknowledgement they already deserve!

MHS, parents, student athletes: Please reconsider the design (and message) of your girls’ athletes’ uniforms before it’s too late!
