Stars & Stripes Club continues civic engagement efforts at Somers High School

SOMERS, N.Y. - The Stars & Stripes Club at Somers High School had a busy fall, including hosting a pair of guest speakers aimed at strengthening students’ understanding of government and public service.

In October, the student-run club welcomed Republican Congressman Mike Lawler for a discussion on the federal government shutdown and current issues in Washington. Students filled the auditorium for the opportunity to hear directly from the congressman, ask questions, and engage in an open dialogue. The club thanked Lawler, his team, SHS administrators, and the many students and teachers who helped make the event a success.

Building on that momentum, the club - a chapter of Turning Point USA - organized a lunchtime Q&A session earlier this month with Democratic State Senator Pete Harckham in response to student requests for more opportunities to hear from leaders across the political spectrum. Senator Harckham expressed his appreciation for the invitation, noting the value of speaking with students about issues facing New York and how the state can continue to move forward.

Together, the events highlight the Stars & Stripes Club’s mission to promote civic awareness, encourage open discussion, and provide students with firsthand insight into local, state, and national government.
