SOMERS, N.Y. - On Jan. 15, Somers traveled to Yorktown, and in terms of taking any dual meet, there’s no getting around the Tuskers' biggest deficiency.
With no big guys to fill out the lineup, the forfeits really tally the points against, and a 41-29 loss followed. But Somers still made some noise, and it started with the first match of the evening.
Ethan Steuber came out, shot the takedown and his night was almost over. The 116-pounder registered back points and gave Somers a 6-0 lead at 1:05 of the first.
The first forfeit of the night was next, and like that, the score was tied. Ryan Ball was almost as fast, though, and by design.
“I just wanted to get it done,” said the 124-pounder.
A pin that was so fast his description could only run longer.
“He went for my leg, and I was waiting for him to grab my other leg,” said Ball. “It never happened. So I just bent down, hooked his other leg and went from there.”
12-6 looked even better after Cal Ehrmann was done with Giancarlo Gentile. He ran up a 15-0 score, and since the major decision prevented the Tusker from getting a pin, six points were off the table for his team. Dominance either way, the senior still lamented the shortfall.
“I could have done better on top, ” said Ehrmann.
Good for a 17-6 lead anyway, Somers wasn’t able to get back on the scoreboard until the lineup turned over. At 101, it was Robbie DeCamp who hit the mat, and he did so running. “I got the takedown in the first and a cradle for back points,” said DeCamp.
A 7-0 lead, DeCamp started the second period down, and a reversal didn’t come so easy. He eventually won the struggle and then put the match on lockdown.
“I got the cradle and pinned him,” said DeCamp.
One match to go, Loghan Dwyer did the honors, and after starting with a takedown, he hit his stride.
“I like riding legs. I can just stretch him out, keep him flat, and I can just power him down,” said the 108-pounder.
This time the result was a cradle, and a 7-0 first period lead. In control, Dwyer used his upper body to maintain the rest of the way.
“I didn’t get high or low. So he couldn’t really do anything,” said Dwyer, and an overhead cradle put the final six points on the board in the Somers loss.
