SOMERS, N.Y. - Entering an abandoned or vacant building is not only illegal, it’s very unsafe, state police warn.
Recent incidents include an unauthorized entry into a vacant facility in Somers, which resulted in a small fire.
Police were reluctant to release the name of the place for fear it might encourage other folks to go there.
There is a growing trend on social media platforms, including TikTok, in which individuals post videos of themselves entering abandoned or vacant properties.
Entering or remaining in such structures without permission may result in arrest and criminal charges, including trespass and related offenses,
These locations are “inherently dangerous,” according to PIO Trooper Krystal P. Paolicelli.
Many abandoned buildings are structurally compromised and may contain hazardous materials, open shafts, exposed wiring, or other conditions that can result in serious injury or death.
“The New York State Police urge the public to stay out of these properties. Our priority is to protect public safety while enforcing the law and preventing avoidable incidents,” Paolicelli added.
