Somers softball pounds Pelham in 18-1 win

SOMERS, N.Y. - On Thursday, April 23, Somers was back on their brand-new field and were ready to play host to Pelham. A long trip with probably plenty of traffic, the Pelicans' late arrival delayed the game for 45 minutes, and given how inactive the Tusker bats were, maybe there was a correlation. Not quite. The girls always do what needs to be done, and this day was no different.

They drew 15 walks and took an easy victory, 18-1.

The late start revealed no impact on Emily Boyle’s rhythm, though.  After Katie Holmes snared a line drive to short, the Somers starter blew away the last two batters on strikes.

The space time continuum reestablished, Julia Peanamanda and Cole were the first to take one for the team. Four each actually and Somers had runners on first and second with no one out.

Of course, these Tuskers still knew how to swing, and Caitlin Fitts was the first to let the birds see their opponents' trunks. The first baseman’s hit up the middle scored Peanamanda, and the onslaught was on.

Along with Victoria Morel’s RBI single, three subsequent walks would have to do. But Alyssa Pirraglia gave the home crowd something to cheer about when she also broke from the game plan. The second baseman smoked a triple to right center, and three more runs were in.

A nine-run first in total, Boyle gave way to Mia DiChiaro, and she was just slightly less dominant.  One run over five innings, the reliever also racked up five strikeouts to the bottom line.

As for the offense, the contributors were obviously many, and alongside Pirraglia, Morel, Kayleigh Conti and Boyle were the big producers. Morel drove in three on one hit and a walk, Conti had four RBIs with a hit and two walks, and Boyle helped tally the total with three runs scored on four walks.
