SOMERS, N.Y. - On Wednesday, September 10, the Somers volleyball team looked to stay undefeated, and after taking the first two sets against visiting Ossining, the Tuskers finished strong for a 3–0 victory.
Somers claimed the opener 25–22, with Katie Kourakos setting the tone. At set point, she surprised everyone by pushing into the deep corner rather than setting up a hitter. The shot found open space, and Katie Coughlin sealed the win with an ace.
The Tuskers started fast. Abby Babboni delivered a kill from the left side, followed by two aces from Kourakos. Ossining answered, but Babboni’s block reignited Somers. Svea Almquist added an ace, Olivia Tran chipped in with two more, and Somers built a 9–3 lead.
The visitors cut it to 12–10, but Babboni took command again with two kills from the middle. Almquist served another winner, and Claire Cronin added a kill after some stellar digs by Kourakos and Almquist. From there, Somers pushed ahead, with Olivia Donaldson painting the sideline and Kourakos showing off her left-handed advantage. Tran’s fearless diving save set up another Kourakos kill before Babboni finished the set, 25–22.
The second set began tight, but Ossining faltered with a string of errors, and Somers surged ahead 14–8. Ossining’s Elizabeth Morris gave her team a lift with a diving save that set up a Talia Cort kill, but Somers held firm. Babboni and Almquist answered, and Cronin came up big at the net. With Ossining struggling to find consistency, the Tuskers closed out the set 25–16, capped by an ace from Ella Barron.
Ossining showed fight in the third. After an early 2–2 tie, Reily Gibbons gave the visitors a spark with consecutive aces and a 5–4 lead. But Somers regained momentum behind off-speed shots from Tran and Cronin, extending the lead to 11–5.
Ossining responded again, rallying behind Cort, Lopes, and Kaylie Howie to tie the score at 13, then battling to a 20–20 deadlock. That’s when Kourakos’ block swung momentum, and Khloe Kishart stepped to the service line. With a grin and a sarcastic “No sweat,” she delivered back-to-back aces. After an Ossining misfire, Kourakos added another point, and Coughlin closed it out with a soft serve that forced an error.
The 25–20 win completed the sweep, moving Somers to 3–0 on the season.
