SOMERS, N.Y. - After several standout seasons and the graduations of stars like Julia Arbelaez and Tiana Righetti, Somers girls soccer has slipped under the Section One radar. But new head coach Brian Lanzetta isn’t concerned—in fact, he welcomes the underdog role.
“It’s nice to not have the spotlight on us,” Lanzetta said. “We're working hard, and it motivates us.”
At the back, goalkeeper Olivia Tatela anchors the defense. With extensive FC Somers experience, she has her coach’s full confidence.
“She knows what she’s doing,” said Lanzetta.
Replacing former standout Julia Schmidberger will be no small task, but Lanzetta sees opportunity in the position.
“With a younger keeper,” he noted, “there’s also the potential to grow and become someone known in the program.”
On the field, captains Marley Hawkins and Lily Mazzella are already making an impact. Their communication and aggressive play will be key in guiding the team.
The defense also features a familiar name in Natalie D’Ippolito. “It’s nice to have another D’Ippolito in the program,” Lanzetta said, referencing her brother Matthew’s past leadership. “She’s so passionate and loves soccer.”
Midfielder Lindsay Ulaj returns as the team’s third captain, and Lanzetta expects her to turn heads this season. “I think Lindsey is going to be a real name to look out for in the section,” he said. “She’s clean on the ball and very smart.”
Rounding out the captaincy is Isabella Wissa, who will help push the ball forward to striker Aurora Reilly. “She’s fast, she’s strong, she’s fantastic,” Lanzetta said of his offensive weapon.
While the Tuskers face the challenge of replacing a strong graduating class, Lanzetta sees plenty of promise in his roster. “I think we have some players who will get their time to shine, and the section will learn about them,” he said.
