Somers Girls Basketball Preview: Tuskers look to rebound with new head coach

SOMERS, N.Y. - The 2024–25 girls basketball season didn’t deliver many wins last year, and at first glance, the challenge of turning things around might not seem ideal. But new head coach Kevin Rogers sees it differently.

“I’m very excited for the opportunity. Somers is a great school. We have a great group of girls. They’ve started off the season very energetic, and I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

Leading the backcourt is Ashley Kuchinsky, returning for her third year on varsity. “She’s stepping up from the sophomore underclass to a leadership role,” Rogers said.

Joining her is sophomore guard Elana Contreras, who brings a full year of experience and a determination to avoid any slump. “Elana has made so much progress since last year. She had a great freshman season and hasn’t settled,” Rogers said. “She has stayed hungry to get better, and I think she’s going to have a phenomenal season.”

Contreras also brings an on-court edge that opponents have learned not to underestimate. “In school and everywhere else, she’s always smiling and happy,” Rogers joked. “But when she gets into game mode, her face turns serious, and you don’t want to mess with her.”

Less intimidating in demeanor—but not in skill—is Shea Mullins. “She had a great JV season last year as an eighth grader,” Rogers said. “Stepping up, she handles the ball well and is a good shooter.”

Smart and improving every day, Mullins should have no trouble finding Kacey McCullough in the paint, with Emma Flores and Erin O’Brien flanking the center as wings.

Also returning this year are Caitlyn Mayfield and Mia Paulmeno, both of whom missed last season. New faces, old faces—regardless of the lineup, the mission is the same. As Rogers put it, whether at practice, in scrimmages, or in games: “Just try winning every day.”
