SOMERS, N.Y. - A 6-10 record is not necessarily a statistic that a coach focuses on as a new season gets underway. The Tuskers’ line last year, Coach Shannon Scavelli isn’t bogged down in the least, but she does have another significant figure in mind.
“This crew that I started with three years ago, I’m really excited to have them go as seniors,” she asserted.
One of those seniors is Aimee Kovacs. Behind a few Tusker goalies previously, said Scavelli, “She’s learned from them what it takes to play as a Somers Field Hockey goaltender. Put in the work, every game you got to play the whole 60 minutes.”
Of course, Kovacs is not an island. “She has a strong relationship with our defenders,” said the coach. “She’s not afraid to tell people what to do, and where to go.”
Open to suggestion, Vivian DaVilla and Allison Kaminski are the returning defenders with the most experience, while Kiera Linares and Sophia Borelli will contribute to the corps’ relentless stubbornness. “They have a not-in-my-circle mentality,” boasted Scavelli.
Up the grid at midfield, Caitlyn Mayfield is always in the stretch run. “The workhorse — offense or defense — whatever it is, she’ll help everybody to be motivated and elevate their game,” said Scavelli.
The senior won’t be alone, either. Marissa Petrini and Zoe MacSweeney will join her in the midfield, and in transit, they’ll be joined by a glut of forwards. Sloane Filippazzo, Emma Donaldson, Ruola Bachas and Olivia DiGiacomo among them, said Scavelli, “they’re going to get a lot of good time in there to give as much energy as they can.”
A mindset that dovetails with the overall strategy. “Our philosophy is don’t stop running,” revealed Scavelli.
She doesn’t complicate the goals, either. “We just want to complete every game,” concluded the coach.
