Community rallies to support Somers High School alum stricken with Guillain-Barré Syndrome

SOMERS, N.Y. - SHS Class of 2022 alum Emily Bernhard, a 21-year-old University of Alabama senior, has been thrust into a life-altering medical battle that has led to an outpouring of community support.

On Oct. 19, Emily was suddenly diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare autoimmune disorder that attacks the peripheral nerves, causing rapid muscle weakness, paralysis, and breathing difficulties.

Initially thought to have mono, Emily’s condition deteriorated alarmingly within days. From walking and talking normally, she quickly lost the ability to move, walk, or speak clearly. Thanks to the timely presence of her parents, Carl and Jessica Bernhard, Emily was rushed to the ER, admitted, and soon transferred to DCH Tuscaloosa. Within 24 hours, she was moved to the ICU, intubated, and placed on a ventilator.

For nearly two weeks, Emily remained fully alert while unable to move, enduring life-saving care before being transferred to UAB, where she began plasmapheresis treatments. She was removed from the ventilator on Nov. 9 and continues to fight through intensive care challenges, including weakened vocal cords and swallowing difficulties. Daily respiratory treatments, along with physical and occupational therapy, are helping her slowly regain strength.

Doctors believe Emily’s sudden illness may have been triggered by a recent flu shot. She now faces a long and difficult road to recovery, which will include months—or possibly years—of rehabilitation, including physical, occupational, respiratory, and speech therapy. Emily has been accepted to the Shepard Center in Atlanta for specialized rehabilitation once she is medically stable.

Emily’s family has devoted themselves fully to her care, temporarily relocating from New York to Alabama and taking leave from their jobs to support her through this unimaginable ordeal. The financial burden of ICU care, extended hospitalization, medical transport, and long-term rehabilitation is overwhelming.

In response, a community fundraising effort has already brought in more than $70,000 as of Thursday, Nov. 20.
