Somers Baseball Preview: Tuskers eye section title run

Posted

SOMERS, N.Y. - Last year, Somers’ season came to an end when they ran into a buzz saw at Mahopac in the sectional playoffs. The Tuskers were no-hit by Nick Masciarelli, but the performance wasn’t for lack of effort.

“We competed. We did everything we could and were a top-five seed,” said Somers manager JT Genovese.

Still, Section One moved the Tuskers down to Class A, and fair or not, Genovese is focused on moving forward.

“It’s put up or shut up,” he said.

On the mound, Gavin Kelly will lead the way.

“Gavin is a freak,” Genovese said, pointing to his high-80s fastball and strong command of his breaking ball.

Behind him, the Tuskers have Rich McAuley as their No. 2 starter.

“He was All-Section as a sophomore,” Genovese noted.

James Radding saw innings last year and will return, while Owen DeBisceglie brings plenty of excitement.

“He throws absolute gas,” Genovese said.

Behind the plate, Justin Thomas will take over catching duties.

“He was our backup catcher last year,” Genovese said. He’s also expected to contribute as a utility infielder.

At first base, Lorenzo D’Ambrosio returns after a strong season and is expected to anchor the lineup again.

“The ball flies off his bat,” Genovese said, noting D’Ambrosio’s six home runs last season.

Second base is currently up for grabs. The rest of the infield will feature Jack Hopper at shortstop and McAuley at third base.

In the outfield, Tyler Venturini has one spot locked down, while several younger players will compete to fill the remaining positions.

At the plate, Genovese feels confident in the returning players at the top of the order and is optimistic about the lineup’s depth.

“At the end of the order, we’re going to have some young guys with a lot of talent that can help us out,” he said.
