SOMERS, N.Y. - Tommy Albano has scored another touchdown in his storied sports education career.

Appointed last July as the Somers Central School District’s interim director of physical education, health and athletics, the longtime freshman football coach was permanently installed in the position when the Board of Education met on Tuesday, March 17.

He had worked closely with the previous director, Marc Hattem, who resigned last June.

Superintendent Dr. Adam Bronstein sent a note to the school community recently to say that after an extensive search by the hiring committee -- and with “thoughtful and informative” feedback from families, students, faculty, and staff – the district was ready to select “an integral member” of its leadership team.

Based on that “roadmap,” it concluded that that person needed to be “someone who champions collaborative leadership and inclusive programming, while maintaining high standards in athletics.”

“We looked for someone with a track record of supporting students in both their physical and emotional wellbeing and growth, and someone who prioritizes both program development and day-to-day instructional consistency,” explained Bronstein, who recommended that the school board approve the appointment.

Albano's Stats

Albano has held a number of roles during his four-year tenure in Tusker land, including athletic director, assistant principal and dean of students at Somers Intermediate School as a “teacher on special assignment,” K-8 physical education and health education curriculum team leader, and a physical and health education teacher.

“Tommy is uniquely suited for this role,” wrote Bronstein, noting that Albano had previously served in others school districts as both a director and teacher in the physical and health education areas.

Calling Albano’s approach “particularly impressive,” Bronstein said he “fosters both collaboration and positivity, while ensuring safety and fairness.”

Albano also has 15 years of coaching experience in seven sports, ranging from the third grade to the varsity level.

A graduate of Manhattanville College, he has a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s in physical education and sports pedagogy.

Albano also studied “school building leadership” at SUNY Plattsburgh.

He earned an advanced certificate in educational leadership from Long Island University and is certified in New York state as a “school district leader.”

Albano holds a number of other certifications and is trained in safety and emergency response preparedness.
