Some Yorktown residents remained without power Tuesday as crews continued working to clear downed trees, blocked roadways and storm damage left behind by a fast-moving storm.

On Illington Road, resident Reshmi Bose said her neighborhood was still without power and residents were concerned about emergency access while waiting for storm debris and utility issues to be addressed.

Bose told Yorktown News there were electrical fires in the area Monday following the storm and that, after multiple calls, a Con Edison tree crew arrived to begin removing a downed tree. She said tree removal would need to be completed before electrical repairs could begin.

“We are still without power and trapped in,” she said. “There are young children in the neighborhood and no way to get out if anyone has an emergency.”

In a Nixle alert, the town’s community notification system, issued early Tuesday, Yorktown police said they responded to numerous reports of downed trees and wires throughout the town, with several roads closed as crews worked to restore safe travel conditions.

The road closures included Baker Street south of Inspiration Road, 3510 Sagamore Ave., 2275 Mohansic Ave. between Edcris Road and Leland Avenue, Deer Street and Winding Court, Foothill Street and Lockwood Road, 1025 Hanover St., 358 Illington Rd. and 2571 Dunning Drive.

At the time of the alert, issued at about 5 a.m., police said outage maps showed 112 Con Edison customers and 13 NYSEG customers without power. The NYSEG numbers were the same as those reported shortly before 2 p.m. Monday.

NYSEG said in a Facebook post that crews were focused on restoring power to all remaining impacted customers by 4 p.m. Tuesday. The company said crews were concentrating on the hardest-hit areas of Dutchess County, including Pawling and Sylvan Lake, where extensive tree damage caused downed wires and broken cross arms.

If customers remain without power after restoration is complete, NYSEG advised them to report outages to 800-572-1131 so crews could investigate.

Police, along with Highway Superintendent Dave Paganelli, Supervisor Ed Lachterman and other town officials, urged residents to continue using caution while traveling.

Officials advised residents to drive slowly if travel was necessary and have continued using social media to provide information as conditions changed.

Bose said she has been in contact with Paganelli and that they “appreciate his efforts to get a resolution on this.”

County Board of Legislators Chairman Vedat Gashi, a Yorktown resident, has also visited the site, Bose said, in hopes of working together to resolve the issues and allow residents to return to normal activities.

VFW Post 8328 Commander Alex Mandara told Yorktown News that residents without power or Wi-Fi, or anyone in need of a cold drink, can call him at (914) 497-8185 for assistance.

Yorktown News is continuing to track the storm’s impact. Residents with storm photos, updates or experiences to share can email yorktownnews@halstonmedia.com.
