Mahopac, NY - New York State Senator Pete Harckham announced today that he has secured a $100,000 grant for the design and installation of a solar carport and EV charging stations at the Donald B. Smith government campus to help Putnam County convert to electric vehicles.

“I am glad that we can help Putnam County as it transitions its fleet to EVs, as part of its green initiatives and sustainability practices,” said Harckham. “It is important for local governments to take the lead and set an example in the transition to clean energy, as we work to address climate change. I applaud the county’s visionary leadership.”

Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne said: “This critical state investment will ensure additional resiliency and sustainability for the residents of Putnam County and expand our renewable energy infrastructure. Thank you to Senator Harckham for securing the special state grant and continuing to advocate as a partner for our community.”

The funding will be used to design and install a Solar Carport generating up to 25 KW of electricity from up to 80 solar panels, which are designed to power up to four 240 VAC charging stations.

The Donald B. Smith government campus in Carmel comprises various county offices, including the Department of Emergency Services, the Department of Senior Resources, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Carmel Friendship Center. The departments currently use vehicles that are powered by fossil fuels, but the county plans to convert the fleet to hybrid and electric in the near future. The solar carport would be used to supplement the solar facilities planned for the buildings on the campus.

This funding is part of the municipal electrification grant that Harckham delivered to all municipalities in Senate District 40 through the Community Resiliency, Economic Sustainability, and Technology (CREST) program.

In August 2023, Harckham announced $2.3 million in grant funding available to local municipalities for various improvement and infrastructure projects, including downtown enhancements and new public safety equipment, all designed to benefit residents without burdening taxpayers.

Harckham has delivered more than $30 million of state grant funding to municipalities, nonprofits and first responders in the 40th Senate District since taking office in 2019.

Pete Harckham represents the 40th Senate District, which includes the towns of Carmel, Kent, Patterson and Southeast, and the village of Brewster in Putnam County; the town of Stony Point in Rockland County; and the city of Peekskill, the towns of Bedford, Cortlandt, Lewisboro, New Castle, North Salem, Ossining, Somers and Yorktown, the town/village of Mount Kisco, and the villages of Briarcliff Manor, Buchanan, Croton-on-Hudson and Ossining in Westchester County.
