KATONAH, N.Y. - A serious crash involving an SUV and a tractor-trailer shut down a stretch of the Saw Mill River Parkway Tuesday afternoon and prompted a coordinated, multi-agency rescue effort.

The Bedford Hills Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 1:47 p.m. on April 14 to a reported motor vehicle accident with entrapment on the parkway. Upon arrival, Chief Patierno determined the crash had occurred within the Katonah Fire District, between the Route 117 Bypass and Harris Road exits.

According to officials, the SUV had underridden the tractor-trailer, leaving the driver heavily trapped inside the vehicle. Recognizing the severity of the situation, Chief Patierno requested mutual aid from the Katonah Fire Department.

Fire crews from Bedford Hills and Katonah launched an extensive extrication operation. Using specialized equipment, including stabilization cribbing, hydraulic struts, a grip hoist, and battery-powered rescue tools, firefighters worked to secure and carefully lift the tractor-trailer off the SUV.

Members of the Westchester County Police Emergency Services Unit assisted firefighters at the scene. After approximately 30 minutes of coordinated effort, crews were able to successfully free the trapped victim.

Emergency medical personnel from the Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Westchester EMS treated the patient at the scene before transporting them to Westchester Medical Center for further care.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
