SOMERS, N.Y. - For the last 11 years, participants in the Empire State Ride to End Cancer have set out on a 580 mile journey.
In benefit of the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, participants travel by bus to Staten Island and gear up for a long, inspired trek back.
“We’ve raised 1.7 million dollars,” said William O’Connor.
The ride takes place from July 26 to Aug. 2.
“We’re doing our part,” said Cindy Galuski at the Somers Intermediate School.
There, the bikers tented down for the night and a hard day’s work done didn’t diminish the cheer.
“There’s no staying up late or partying, but we do have a deck of cards,” joked Galuski.
Even so, her friend Katie Black reflected on the dedication and what making the journey takes.
“Grit,” she concluded. “You have to be mentally strong.”
