CARMEL, N.Y.—The Carmel Communities That Care Coalition, in collaboration with the Putnam County Department of Health, Putnam Hospital and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, hosted a successful National Medication Take Back Day on Saturday, April 26.

The event provided residents with a safe, convenient and anonymous way to dispose of prescription, over-the-counter and pet medications. It also educated the public on the risks of medication misuse and the importance of proper disposal. More than 74 Putnam County residents participated, turning in 245 pounds of medication.

Additionally, the event collected 309 pounds of sharps, highlighting a growing need for safe sharps disposal in Putnam County. Putnam Hospital accepts sharps and syringes (no medications) Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the main lobby. For information, call 845-279-5711.

Members of the Carmel Communities That Care Coalition provided information and resources about year-round disposal at local drop boxes. A complete list of medication return boxes available in Putnam County can be found at preventioncouncilputnam.org/medication-return-programs.

The coalition also distributed free Deterra drug deactivation bags and naloxone kits, essential tools in preventing opioid overdose. Naloxone is an intranasal medication that can reverse the effects of opioid overdose and save lives.
