CARMEL, N.Y.—A scammer is trying to coerce victims into sending gift cards by pretending to be a member of law enforcement, according to a Sheriff's Department press release sent on Friday (Nov. 22).
In the release, Sheriff Kevin McConville described a recent spate of threatening phone calls.
“The caller has contacted residents pretending to be a ‘Sergeant Cook’ from the Sheriff’s Office and telling them that they did not respond to a jury summons and that a warrant will be issued for their arrest unless they pay by gift card," the press release said.
"Law enforcement will never ask someone to pay by gift card.”
Officials advise anyone receiving such a call to simply hang up.
The Sheriff's Office is asking any victims of the scam who suffered financial loss to call (845) 225-4300 to help in the investigation.
